The amount of CO suolhd be very low compared to the amount of CO2; the main purpose of the catalytic converter in the exhaust system is to convert CO to CO2 to reduce the amount of CO output. Not sure of the % CO compared to CO2, but it is very small. The US emission limits are quoted in grams/mile which don't seem very intuitive to me. Permitted emission levels are being tightened overtime.
